Dr. Tetyana Lokot, Associate Professor in the School of Communications, Dublin City University and Dr Alessio Cornia, Assistant Professor in the School of Communications at DCU, presented MEDIATIZED EU research at the 2024 General Conference of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR), in Dublin, Ireland, on August 12, 2024. The DCU paper was titled “Irish Neutrality vs. European Values: Affective Polarisartion in Irish Elite Discourses in the Context of Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine”, and was presented as part of the section “Affective polarisation: political identities, emotional reactions and democratic consequences”.

The presentation focused on the dominant Irish elite political and media discourses on EU affairs in Ireland in the context of Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine. IT specifically highlights the evident tensions and affective polarisation in elite discourses around the EU’s normative power and debates about Ireland’s tradition of military neutrality. The paper relies on extensive analysis of in-depth interviews incorporating Q methodology with representatives of Irish political and media elites conducted in November 2022-May 2023 as part of the MEDIATIZED EU research framework.
